Robotics Starts With Simple Instructions

A robot follows instructions using a combination of software, sensors and physical components. Even complicated machines rely on small steps that can be tested one at a time.

Start by drawing a flowchart for a pretend robot that moves around a room. What should it do when it encounters an obstacle? Which sensor would help it notice the obstacle? How could you test the instructions without building anything?

A paper design or beginner-friendly coding simulator is a safe first project. Ask an adult before using electrical components or tools. The most important robotics skill is learning to test and improve an idea.
